{"id":108,"date":"2012-12-24T18:25:01","date_gmt":"2012-12-24T18:25:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ltsprinkle.com\/?page_id=108"},"modified":"2013-03-10T12:32:21","modified_gmt":"2013-03-10T16:32:21","slug":"tuning-and-temperature","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/ltsprinkle.com\/?page_id=108","title":{"rendered":"Tuning and Temperature"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The pitch of the individual pipes in the organ go up and down as the temperature of the air in and around the pipe increases and decreases respectively.\u00a0 Therefore, it is necessary to establish correct temperature for organ tuning, which we refer to as <strong><em>normal temperature for Sunday service.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In most cases, the <em>normal summer<\/em> and <em>normal winter<\/em> temperatures are different. As an example, it would be common for a church to heat at 68 degrees in the winter and cool at perhaps 74 degrees in the summer.\u00a0 In this example, there would be a 6 degree difference between the winter and summer &#8220;normal&#8221; temperatures. A properly tuned organ in this example would be tuned to be slightly flat in the winter and slightly sharp in the summer.<\/p>\n<p>Except in cases where the church sanctuary is used repeatedly throughout the week, we DO NOT recommend that the temperature be set at the normal Sunday temperature seven day a week.\u00a0 First, this approach can wreck a church utility budget and\u00a0second,\u00a0the constant heating during the winter months\u00a0can excessively dry out woodwork causing it to shrink and crack.\u00a0 This not only effects\u00a0parts of the organ but all other woodwork in the room.<\/p>\n<p>A much better approach is to install a programmable thermostat and assign a schedule to suite the use of the sanctuary, e.g. Wednesday choir practice and Sunday service.\u00a0 There are many inexpensive programmable thermostats available\u00a0on the market and some can\u00a0even be\u00a0programmed from your desktop computer, ipad or iphone.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A good starting point would be to program\u00a0UNOCCUPIED temperatures of 55 degrees\u00a0in winter and 85 degrees in summer.\u00a0 The thermostat can then\u00a0adjust the system to\u00a0the\u00a0OCCUPIED (<em>normal temperature for Sunday service<\/em>)\u00a0automatically.\u00a0 Note that the room will reach the\u00a0OCCUPIED\u00a0(comfortable)\u00a0temperature\u00a0long before the organ.\u00a0 Organ pipes exposed out in front of the organ will reach normal temperature rather quickly but pipework enclosed in a case or chamber\u00a0will take another 4 to 8 hours to adjust.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For this reason the heat or air conditioning system MUST be <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">adjusted to the <em>normal temperature for Sunday service<\/em> on the evening of the day before<\/span> our scheduled organ tuning visits and by 10 &#8211; 11 PM on Saturday for a normal Sunday service.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Special Note about Steam Heat<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Allow extra time for steam heating systems to stabilize.<\/p>\n<p>When you turn up a steam heating system from an unoccupied temperature of 55 degrees to an occupied temperature of 68 degrees you can expect the room to heat to well above 70 deg on the first heating cycle.\u00a0 In this case, the system has been heating &#8220;full blast&#8221; for several hours.\u00a0 Steam pressure is at its highest, the boiler is red hot, as is all the piping and radiators.\u00a0 The system won&#8217;t magically stop giving off heat when the thermostat kicks off at 68.\u00a0 It will take a couple of hours (several on-off cycles) for the boiler system to come into equalization with the heating demand of the room.<\/p>\n<p>It can be very beneficial with steam heat systems to program the thermostat to change from the set-back (unoccupied) setting to the normal room temperature in two stages.\u00a0 For example, first turn the heat up to\u00a064 degrees for a couple of hours and then to 68 degrees (or normal Sunday temperature).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The pitch of the individual pipes in the organ go up and down as the temperature of the air in and around the pipe increases and decreases respectively.\u00a0 Therefore, it is necessary to establish correct temperature for organ tuning, which &hellip; <a class=\"more-link\" href=\"https:\/\/ltsprinkle.com\/?page_id=108\">Continue reading <span class=\"meta-nav\">&rarr;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"parent":0,"menu_order":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","template":"","meta":{"footnotes":""},"class_list":["post-108","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/ltsprinkle.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/pages\/108","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/ltsprinkle.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/pages"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/ltsprinkle.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/page"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/ltsprinkle.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/ltsprinkle.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=108"}],"version-history":[{"count":10,"href":"https:\/\/ltsprinkle.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/pages\/108\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":122,"href":"https:\/\/ltsprinkle.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/pages\/108\/revisions\/122"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/ltsprinkle.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=108"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
